Caring for your Silk Saree
Your eyes sparkle and your mood suddenly reaches the zenith when you go to buy a silk saree. You look through all the latest designs the shop has to offer and pick up a single one which charm you with its beauty. You bring it home and wear it a couple of times. Hmm. I really look good in it, you tell yourself. Then one day you see a stain or dirt on your new saree. In an instance, you are out of paradise and onto earth. It is time to work.
Machine wash a silk saree? Never. Scrape it off your memory. Washing machines are a complete no no for silk sarees. Silk sarees are sensitive and fragile; they don’t need the grilling of a machine wash. It is the easiest way to lose a saree’s color and texture.
Dry Clean
If you want your silk saree to look new even after a decade, always get it dry-cleaned. Or at least do it the first time. Dry cleaning helps retain saree’s color and texture, and it also removes stains and dirt. Obviously, it costs much more than simple ironing or washing it at home, but it is worth it if you want to preserve your saree for years.
Detergents
Detergents have harsh chemicals, which can ruin your silk in minutes. Never use chlorine bleaches as it may make your saree yellow. If you do want to wash your silk at home, then know which kind of silk it is. Certain silks such as India silk, Tussar, Dupion, China, Raw silk etc can be washed at home. But use mild detergents and do not keep them soaked in water. Hang them for drying quickly.
Wash in plain water
If you have worn your silk a couple of times without dirtying it much, then you can wash it in lukewarm water. That way you will also save a few bucks. Do not scrub your saree roughly or keep it soaked in water for long. After washing, immediately hang it for drying.
Drying
Before you hang it to dry, take care that your saree is not crumpled. Remove the crumples by stretching it. While it is drying, shake and stretch your saree a couple of times to prevent stiffness. Never dry it in direct sunlight, as it may lose its color. Choose a shady place instead.
Ironing
Always iron a silk saree in medium heat without using water to wet it. Ironing it on high heat can make your saree dull. It is best to keep a cloth over and below your saree so that the iron does directly touch it. That way your saree’s color won’t fade. Iron it gently on medium heat.
Storage
Store you silk in a cool, dry place. Too much of heat, sunlight or moisture can ruin the silk over a period of time.
